As Brooke said, we're using Marmoleum for our new kitchen floor.
The rest of the house is Fir, which is pretty (we stained it all ebony), but is too soft for the high traffic and dog-crazyness of the kitchen. The marmoleum is a real, non-vinyl, linoleum sheet. There are tons of different colors and patterns, and we were going pretty sedate at first, but then decided to do something a little more interesting...
It's a pretty busy pattern, but it's black and white, so I think it'll look really nice once it is on the floor, and combined with the marble counters and painted cabinets. The first time we saw this, our designer was raving about it and we thought it was hideous (we were thinking yellow or blue or checkboard tile).
I guess it's grown on us :)
Like Brooke said, tuesday is the start of our big kitchen remodel. It'll be around 4 months of work, including about a month where the entire back of our house is ripped off.
It'll be great when it's done, but in the meantime, we have a living room full of appliances and dining room furniture (and another dining table may be on the way!) and our entryway is a makeshift kitchen with a fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and cabinet. It was easy getting the cabinet: none of the kitchen cabinetry was secured to the wall, and none of the countertops were secured to the cabinets!!
The hardest part may be working above all the noise and commotion. Luckily I have my laptop and victrola, bauhaus, and zoka (coffee shops with good wi-fi and better coffee) to frequent.
