I just saw a shiny new refrigerated truck going down the street with "Amazon Fresh" painted on it. (too slow to whip out the camera though)
I hadn't heard of that, and neither had google (well, i finally found something a few pages in...), but amazonfresh.com took me to fresh.amazon.com , and sure enough, it's "a new online grocery founded by Amazon, serving customers in the Seattle area". It's a invite-beta right now.
Brooke and I had an amazing 2nd anniversary dinner at Canlis, perhaps the oldest "special occassion" restaurant in Seattle. It was our first time there, as I always discounted it as stodgy and past its prime, but I was very impressed: Impeccable service, excellent food, and a very impressive wine list.
We were seated at table #1, which is a great corner spot where Mr. Canlis always used to sit, and is apparently the most requested table. I wish I'd brought a camera besides my blackberry, because it is a gorgeous restaurant, and perhaps the more unique and coolest view of Seattle i've ever seen. The restaurant is located right off of Aurora, which is a very busy street, but once you're inside there isn't even a sign of it, you feel like you're tucked away in the trees. The view looks north, away from the city skyline, but over Gasworks Park, Lake Union, and the northern half of the city.
Food: Peter Canlis Prawns, Steak Tartare, Canlis Salad, Copper River Salmon (Brooke), Wagyu Ribeye (Me), and Profiteroles. Everything was amazing.. I never order steaks at restaurants, but I was in a red meat mood, hence the tartare and the ribeye, and this was perhaps the best steak I've ever had.
It was a little more formal than we're used to, so we'll save it for special occasions, but we'll definitely be back!
I've used Speakeasy DSL for at least 8 years now. I've always been a big fan of the company (my first seattle memories were hanging out at the speakeasy cafe in 1996 for ambient music night on wednesdays, and chatting on IRC #nwraves and #seattle with the people sitting on the terminals next to me). I recommend them to everyone, and even did a testimonial for their business services.
Lately though, I've become both more cost conscious (my dsl was $125/mo!) and more casual of a user (no more servers at home), so I decided to change providers: "The Man" (Qwest DSL with MSN) actually had better speeds at less than half the price. So far it's been pretty decent, so I called Speakeasy today to cancel my service.
Normally, here's where the story would turn ugly, but it was actually the most pleasant cancellation experience I've ever had! I called the 800-number, got straight through, and the entire process literally took less than 2 minutes. It was a little disconcerting that "i was just out of contract" (8 year contract?!) and that they didn't really verify my identity ("What's your login?" _daryn_ "Is this Daryn?" _yes_) but that's not the point...
It was an incredibly easy and memorably pleasant end to years of terrific service!
Show us something unbelievable.
There were several downed trees like this within a couple blocks of our house, and much of the city was without power for days. Fortunately, we never lost power, with our worst damage being that half of our fence was blown over.

This post of songs about L.A. got me thinking of songs about Seattle (and surroundings). A few good ones came to mind..
#1 Sir Mix-A-Lot, Seattle Ain't Bullshittin'. -- shout outs to lots of locations around town that you probably won't see in a guide book.
#2 Sir Mix-A-Lot, Posse on Broadway. -- what Seattleite can't relate to:"I was born in the S-E-A- double T - L - E, Seattle, born in the C.D. Nigga.. 19th and Yesler"
"Go on back the other way, we'll stop and eat at Dick's"
#3 Perry Como, Seattle. -- this guy is way too happy, must have been summer time.
"The bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle. And the hills the greenest green, in Seattle"
#4 Neko Case, Trice All American -- we saw her play this live at bumbershoot once, and she said something like "you know you never even liked tacoma before this song"..
" I want to tell you about my hometown. It's a dusty old jewel in the South Puget Sound. Well the factories churn and the timbers all cut down..."
#5 West Valley Highway, Marysville -- An old friend of mine is in this band, whose band name is a road down south of Seattle, and who's debut album is named for a town up north.
"she's just a short stretch of a railroad town that never made a map. I think if Mary was still with us man she'd probably give it back just to show, that it ain't worth the powder to blow her up"
Anyone else got some?
